A Place to Retreat
This homeowner has created the perfect getaway, complete with an expansive view of the Kings River
Perched high on a ridge above the Kings River, an unpretentious house with a modern flair offers a lovely retreat for its owner. The homeowner built it there to take advantage of the expansive view of the river below. It is her second home, so the house is meant as a getaway for peace and relaxation.
“I grew up in the country — way out in the country — and hated it as a kid, but as an adult, I just need to get to the woods every now and then for a refresh,” she said.
The brown siding of the house contrasts beautifully against the greens in nature. “I’m told by the decorator and the landscape architect that the dark brown causes the green (in the grass and trees) to really pop,” the homeowner said, “and it also helps (the house) blend into the environment.”
The house features floor-to-ceiling windows stretching along the back of the house from the main living area to the primary suite. The homeowner’s number one goal in having the huge windows was to see the river and take advantage of the view.
When asked what she enjoys most about the house, the homeowner talked about sitting at her writing desk placed in front of the window.
Skip Lacy, owner of L&L Builders, built the house. Born and raised in Northwest Arkansas, he began his career as a licensed electrician and learned everything he could about home construction. He started L&L Builders with his parents more than 25 years ago. A one-man operation, Lacy only builds a few homes a year so that he can concentrate on the details of each one.
“Skip did an exceptional job on building the house,” the homeowner said. “It’s very well built, and the decorators did an exceptional job decorating it, too. I couldn’t ask for it to be any better.”
Ashley Cardiel of Ashley Cardiel Interiors in Springdale did the interior design. “Ashley and her crew helped pick the artwork, so all of the artwork is very special and fits each room,” the homeowner said.
The homeowner is an artist, and several of her pieces grace the home, along with a photograph she took of the bluff across the river, taken from a huge rock that reaches out into the water.
The house has two levels — a main floor and a basement. “Initially it was going to be one story, but since it’s on a steep slope, it made sense to do the basement,” the homeowner said. The basement now houses her art studio. There are two bedrooms on the main floor, one bedroom in the basement and three full baths. The primary bath has a big tub on a platform in front of a floor-to-ceiling window. “It gives a great view to enjoy while soaking in the tub,” she said.
A huge deck off the end of the home and one off the primary suite offer lots of spots to enjoy nature and the view of the property’s 48 acres.
As for the homeowner, she wouldn’t change a thing about the house, and the setting is just right for her. “I just like the peace,” she said. “There’s something about the river that just calms your soul.”
