TheatreSquared Welcomes Electric New Musical Cambodian Rock Band
Guitars tuned. Mic checked. Get ready to rock. Backed by a live band playing contemporary Dengue Fever hits and classic Cambodian oldies, this darkly funny new play tells the story of a father who escaped a murderous regime returning home after 30 years in search of his wayward daughter. As the play jumps back and forth in time, it’s a rock-epic-meets-thrilling-mystery as both the father and daughter are forced to face the music of the past.
Cambodian Rock Band, which the Los Angeles Times calls “a fierce, gorgeous, heartwarming, comedic fairy tale,” will be TheatreSquared’s second musical of the 2023-24 season. The play will be directed by Nelson T. Eusebio III, who returns to TheatreSquared after directing the theater’s 2023 production of the hit comedy Kim’s Convenience. Eusebio’s other recent projects include Twelfth Night and Cyrano de Bergerac at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre, where he is associate artistic director. His production of Cyrano was the first to be helmed by an Asian American director as well as the first to star an Asian American actor in the titular role.
Cambodian Rock Band was written by New York-based playwright and screenwriter Lauren Yee, whose other plays include King of the Yees and Ching Chong Chinaman. She is the winner of the Doris Duke Artist Award, the Steinberg Playwright Award and the Horton Foote Prize, among others.
“Yee has made her characters so joyfully and ridiculously human that it’s impossible not to identify with them,” the Los Angeles Times said. Northwest Arkansas theater fans won’t want to miss this innovative and emotional musical. Cambodian Rock Band opens Feb. 28 and will run through March 24.
